Culture Commune has organised many artistic and cultural events with a partnership approach since its creation in 1990. This includes commissioning new work, hosting artist residencies and programming performances, workshops, training courses and placements. In 1998, Culture Commune started out in its drama creation centre in Loos-en-Gohelle. It was the former base of the 11/19 mining pit and associated industrial buildings. Its aim is to spread and develop projects involving the local population.

Z’ArtsUp! is a European festival of outdoor arts in Béthune, with its Z’Ailleurs («Elsewheres»), the Fête de la Chartreuse in Gosnay and the Temps Forts of Base 11/19. Devoted to contemporary performing arts, it is a multidisciplinary, melting pot of theatre, outdoor arts, circus arts, dance and creative writing, not to mention shows for young audiences, readings and multimedia. The Scène Nationale today covers an area of three District Councils, 110 towns and villages, with a total of 650 000 people.
